Forum: GratefulDead Subject: DP2 or Download Series Vol. 6 (3/17/68)?

I was going to use the $10 iTunes gift card I got for Christmas to bolster my Dead collection and I found two live releases that I can get for $9.99: Dick's Picks 2 and 3/17/68 (Download Series Vol. 6). I'm somewhat drawn towards the download series because of the monster Caution clocking in at 20:54 and the fact that I cannot get that one on an actual CD (which I prefer) but I've heard great things about DP2's Dark Star and NFA>GDTRFB>NFA suite. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you and hope you all had a great Christmas!

the dark star on DP2 is a classic, If Dick thought it was worth releaing as a single cd as dp2, who are we to argue? its very trippy, very laid back, and im going off to find it and listen to it now...

I can't speak to DS6 but I was just listening to DP2 last night and put it on again when I saw your post.

The Dark Star is absolutely exquisite -- melodic and intricate for the most part, and just when they start to get lost in the atonal wilderness, Bob leads them back into the light with the opening chords of Sugar Magnolia. The rest of the show is also fine, but the Dark Star epitomizes that Dead that I love. If you want to have a reliable dose of psychedelic beauty always close at hand, you'll want to own this CD.

okay, since it had been awhile, i just listened to both your selections, and while i must admit that the DP#2 DS is quite fine, especially for a post-69 Star, the 3/17/68 download is where you need to put your dollars; as astute as my friend Cliff is when it comes to well-jammed sets, clearly he's had too much of the mulled wine this holiday!

This is a no brainer dude!

The Tighten Up Jam in the DS of DP #2 just might be the most mind blowing music the Dead ever played!

Though a seeming contradiction, I would actually recommend DP2...the March 68 show is nice, but many others close to that one exist, whereas I think the quality of DP2 pushes it slightly ahead of the other...hmmm, not sure that made sense, but that's it for the Christmas wine...

Well....the obvious answer is to get both (one now & another later)....but, '68 lover that I am, I must echo most the people here in favor of DP2 from '71. Great Dark Star, a so-so St Stephen, but the NFA....OH GOD, the NFA! You have to hear it to believe it, Garcia takes off into the heavens. In fact, I must go listen to it again....

bought them both 3 years ago, as downloads, and love them both

v6 is sharp and loud show, everything smokes, brilliant rendition of caution

dp2 is really 1 beautiful, spacey and flowing segue: ds jam > s mag > st st > nfa > gdtrfb > nfa

u gotta have them both. no way to choose

since u already got a gift card for 1, find the other 1 for free on the web (search). or even better - spend the card on stickers or something and dl them both for free now, in the free zones of the cyber space. poke around
